The Swedish Driving Test part II

When  the day and time of your driving test arrives, you’ll meet the driving inspector/trafikinspektören in the lobby of Trafikverkets Förarprov. When you are introduced to each other the driving inspector  needs to see your identification. Your ID needs to be valid. If you can’t show a valid ID you will be denied the opportunity to prove your driving skills. So, make sure that everything that has to do with your identification card is in order. Even If you’ve taken the driving test before you’ll need to show your ID again. You will also be asked to confirm, with your signature, that you don’t have another drivers licence within the EEC (European Economic Community).

Another important thing to remember is to be there on time. If you’re 5 to 10 minutes late there is a serious risk that your driving test will be cancelled and you´ll be sent away without being able to drive. You´ll still have to pay the fee though!

After this procedure the two of you will walk out to the car. You’ll either have a car with you, maybe from your driving school, or you’ll be driving Trafikverkets car. Once you arrive at the car you’ll be asked to sit in the driving seat and to begin adjusting your driving position. When you’re ready, the driving inspector will take you through the driving test, explaining how it will be done and you will be asked to perform a security check (brakes, steering, engine fluids, etc.). Every driving inspector  has their own way of doing things so the procedure may vary in some regards.

The driving inspector  will tell you where to drive, if to turn left or right in intersections, to take the first, second or third exit in a roundabout. In Sweden we use left for the third exit, right for the first and straight ahead for the second. If he or she doesn’t give you any specific instructions of where to go, just plan to drive straight ahead. You may also be given instructions to follow road signs/directions towards various places like a city nearby, the E4 or Centrum (town centre). During the driving test the driving instructor will give you certain tasks such as; parking the car, backing up/ reversing around a corner, etc. or turning the car around to go in the opposite direction. If you forget or if you don’t understand the information given by the driving instructor, always feel free to ask.

Your driving doesn’t have to be perfect, but it has to be good enough, meaning that there can’t be any major mistakes or mistakes that occur repeatedly during your driving. Immediately after the driving test you’ll be given the result and if you should by any chance have failed your test, you’ll get feedback from the driving inspector so that you know what to practice on  before trying again.
